Eldon Brustuen is President of Brustuen International, Inc., an
international consulting and trade brokerage firm specializing in trade
between the United States, the Asia Pacific, and Europe. Since 1986
Brustuen International has been a matchmaker for trade ventures throughout
the international marketplace.
From 1983 until July 1986, Mr. Brustuen was Director of International
Trade for the Minnesota Trade Office. The office, which he co-founded,
was created by the Minnesota Legislature to promote the export of Minnesota
products and services and to attract foreign investment to the state.
He was employed for nine years by the Avionics Division of Honeywell,
Inc. In 1983, as a Honeywell Loaned Executive to the Governor's Office,
he helped create an international trade promotion program for the state
through the establishment of the Minnesota Trade Office.
Mr. Brustuen is considered a spokesperson for the regional international
trade community. He has organized and directed numerous international
events, including the Korean-U.S. Midwestern Economic Conference, Japan
Month in Minnesota, and Shaanxi month. He has spoken extensively on
international trade issues to more than 100 business, civic, governmental
and academic institutions in the United States, Europe, and Asia.
A 1968 graduate of St. Olaf College, Mr. Brustuen received his
master's degree in business administration from the University of St.
Thomas. He has attended numerous postgraduate courses and seminars on
a wide range of business and international trade subjects.
Mr. Brustuen spent four years as International Trade Consultant
to Padilla Speer Beardsley Public Relations firm. His primary focus
was in establishing international marketing communications programs
for client companies, as well as in marketing the international services
of the firm. He assisted in creating WORLDCOM, the largest group of
independent public relations firms in the world. With over 100 offices
worldwide, WORLDCOM established Padilla Speer Beardsley's New York office
as its world headquarters.
He was a co-founder in 1988 of Laurel Medical Corporation, a
privately held medical products company that developed a non-invasive
fetal monitor used for heart and respiration monitoring of the infant
prior to delivery. He served as an officer and director of the company
until it was acquired by Peritronics Corporation in 1994.
In 1986 he co-founded American Midwest Trading Corporation in
partnership with former Minnesota Governor Wendell Anderson. The company
imported upscale European consumer products to the United States under
contract to several national mass merchandisers.
Professional and Civic Involvement
Mr. Brustuen has most recently been a member of the Japan-American
Society, Minnesota World Trade Center, Minnesota International Center,
Minnesota Software Association, World Trade Association, the U.S.-China
Friendship Association, and the Sons of Norway. He is serving or has
served on the boards of Sunrise Software, NuShape Foods, Inc; Laurel
Medical Corporation, Capital Travel Corporation, Family and Children's
Services, the Nordic Center, the Norwegian-American Chamber of Commerce,
and the Twin Cities International Citizen Award. Mr. Brustuen has also
served as Executive Director of the Governor's Advisory Commission on
International Trade, was a member of the Governor's Task Force on Woodfuel
Products, and was part of the original Advisory Commission on the World
Trade Center. He was a member of the Advisory Board of the National
Association of State Development Agencies International Division, the
World Trade Center Agricultural Advisory Board, the Iberaki City/Minneapolis
Cultural Association, the International Committee of the Minnesota branch
of the American Electronics Association, and the board of the Midwest-Japan
Association.
Mr. Brustuen has been active in Minnesota politics for many
years. In 1982, he served as statewide chair of the successful Rudy
Perpich for Governor campaign.
